28 Apr What Causes Water Leaks In The Ceiling?

Do you see water droplets forming on your ceiling? Hear water dripping sounds at night? If so then you might be having a ceiling leakage in your home. Naturally then, you would be inclined to ask how did this come about?
The answer to this question varies. On one hand, determining the source of water leakages in an apartment would defer from that of a landed property. On the other hand, water is a highly mobile substance that allows it to move in all directions. As such, no definite answer exists.
Rather, several factors and possibilities must be considered when searching for the source of the water seepage. In this article, we shall be covering the most common types of water leakages and their signs.
Signs of Ceiling Leakages
Most homeowners are first alerted to ceiling leakages when they see water dripping down from it. Yet, this is not the sole sign of ceiling leakages. Rather, there are earlier signs that can be used to identify leakages from your ceiling.

Yellowing & Browning Spots
Patches of yellowing or browning are a sign of water leakages. What is happening above your ceiling is the growth of mould which in turn eats away at your structure. The subsequent decay thus lends a yellow or brown patch on your ceiling’s interior.
Mould thrives in dark and moist environments. When water penetrates your home and accumulates above your ceiling, these conditions are achieved. As such, unknown to you, your ceiling structure would start to weaken. At the most advance state, the part of your ceiling with the patches may give way, leaving a hole.
If your ceiling is painted, then alternative signs to yellowing and browning would either be a dulling of the colour of flaking. For the same reasons that yellowing or browning occurs, you would be able to observe a change in your paint’s colour.
Flaking paint leads to pieces of it falling down from your ceiling. This occurs as their bond to the ceiling has been weakened by mould. As such, small pieces start to stick out from your ceiling before dropping down.
Spike in Damp Levels
An investigation that can be carried out would be that of a damp test using moisture monitors. Inserting moisture monitors into your ceiling, you will be able to record the amount of moisture in the air. Should the reading be well above the average moisture reading in your area, then you may have excess damp above your ceiling.

How to Find a Water Leak in Your House?
3 Common Causes of Water Leakages
Water leakages can come from a number of places, typically any wet areas or exposed surfaces to weather.
Roof Leakages

When landed properties have ceiling leakages, we naturally first suspect their roofs. Roofs are among the most exposed surfaces in your home to water as they receive the blunt end of rain and wind. While roofs are usually designed with some form of water resistant or waterproofed system, these systems can wear down. As such, over time, it is common for roofs to start leaking water.
Firstly, roofs can enable water leakages when their materials are physically damaged. During storms, heavy and impactful debris such as tree branches may be blown onto your roof. Their impact is sufficient to damage the roof tiles which in turn creates gaps for water to enter.
Secondly, poor fall path would also lead to roof leakages. If water is not quickly guided away from your roof or is blocked from exiting, then puddles or small pools will be formed. These pools place tremendous pressure on your roof’s materials to repel water. Eventually, moisture will find its way into your home when pools are allowed to remain on your roof.
Pipe Leakages

All houses have hidden pipes that run the distance behind your walls. They deliver water to or away from your home’s water appliances. These same pipes can be prone to leakages due to a variety of reasons, including:
- Choking within the pipes due to foreign debris leading to increased pressure and thus pipe leakages. Commonly, human hair and food debris get stuck in pipes. Furthermore, if the toilet is treated as a dustbin, then the chances of choking is exponentially increased.
- A misalignment between the pipes above ground and underground. This exerts pressure on the pipe and causes it to leak eventually. Unfortunately, this is a natural occurrence that can only be corrected through maintenance or renovation.
- Physical damage from rodents behind your walls and ceiling could also lead to pipe leakages.
Hidden pipe leaks can be tricky to spot since they are not visible. However, the same signs as mentioned before still apply and can be used to check for leakages.
Basement Leakages
Basement leakages occur due to moisture within the surrounding soil. Without proper waterproofing systems on both the exterior and interior of the basement, moisture does travel from the soil into your basement over time.
A likely question that arises in your mind then is how would water seepage from your basement affect your ceiling? The answer lies in the mobility of water. As moisture, water can travel through pores in your home’s infrastructure. This is boosted by capillary forces, not unlike of how plants suck up water from the roots and transport it to the rest its parts.
As such, while water may have entered at your basement level, it can be pulled upwards to your ceiling.
